Truffle season in the Meander Valley has gotten off to a shaky start after recent flash flooding in the area.
Truffles of Tasmania, that has its 20 hectare farm at Deloraine, Tasmania, was forced to halt harvesting the gourmet delicacy for about a week until the water drained from the property.
“We were able to get out on the Saturday before and we got a heap out then because we knew it [the rain] was coming,” farm manager Mark Bowerman said.
Truffle hunters and their dogs were unable recommence harvesting the gourmet delicacy until Monday.
“We were only able to get back in today, we were expecting to find lots of rot but so far we haven’t found much so that’s good news,” Mr Bowerman said. “We got about 10 kilograms out before the rains really hit.”
He said the ground the farm used to grow the truffles had good drainage but the amount of water that fell on the farm meant the ground was waterlogged. He said the farm had never seen that quantity of water before.
