LOCAL restockers gave feedlot buyers a run for their money on the heavier end of the steers at last Friday’s Mt Gambier, SA, store sale.
Most of these steers were returned to paddocks in the South East SA and Western Districts of Victoria at rates $50 up on last month’s prices.
Lighter steers also received plenty of attention from local restockers and were $50 to $100 up on last month, and recorded a record price at Mt Gambier, of $4.39/kg.
Heavy steers topped at $1620 or $3.42/kg for a pen of Red Angus steers, 474kg, sold by Braymore, and knocked down to Thomas Foods International (TFI).
TFI also bought five Nampara blood Angus steers 11-13 months, 349kg, at $1210 or $3.46/kg sold by Nangkita, Eight Mile Creek; and five Angus cross steers, 13-15 months, 393kg, at $1330 or $3.38/kg sold by Springburn.
Teys Australia bought 45 steers 300kg-plus, including 14 Simmental cross, Rellum Farms blood, steers, 391kg, at $1360 or $3.48/kg sold by GC&VJ Muller, Mt Gambier.
Prices on a good quality run of cows and calves reached a high of $2,240, with lively competition between restockers, made $350 higher than the top prices paid in the May store market.
JF Mitselburg sold nine Angus and Angus cross heifers with nine first cross Angus calves at-foot (CAF), in-calf to Yerwal and Granite Ridge bulls at $2240 and a second draft of Angus and Angus cross cows, second calvers at $2200 to Landmark Tintinara. They also sold 18 4-6 year old Angus cows and calves, same breeding, at $2060 to Chay & Merrett, Millicent.
Some buyers who missed out on steers bid against strong feedlot competition for heifers. D&N Peel, Mt Benson sold 26 preg-tested empty Angus heifers, 361kg, at $1080 or $2.99/kg to Miller Whan & John, Kingston.
