A strong across-the-border demand from South Australia maintained store cattle prices at peak rates at Hamilton, Vic on Thursday May-26th.
Offering a full penning of 2390 of mostly spring-drop weaners and light-in-condition yearling-off steers, buyers from the lower western border region were keen for numbers along with handful of export feeders who were at times beaten by eager grass-finishers in their pursuit of the larger grown and heavier weighed cattle.
A further feature of the Hamilton May sale was the complete dispersal of the renowned Cavendish-based Jigsaw Farms Angus and Angus/Hereford-cross herd from the north of Hamilton.
Quitting 700 quality pregnancy tested in calf breeders, aged from first-calf heifers to its 2007-drop age group, prices varied from $1340 to a top of $1570 a head, with Warrnambool, Hamilton, Casterton, Mt Gambier, Penola and Wodonga breeders all keen to rebuild numbers.
