IN A litmus test of the dairy industry, after the Murray Goulburn debacle, the herd dispersal of G&J Reynolds, Nayook, at Warragul. Elders & Alex Scott & Staff held a co-jointly sale of this herd, which was organised some weeks ago, as Graeme and Jacque had relinquished their lease.
Graeme said afterward “We were hoping for an average of $1000, and achieving $1018 per head was marginally better than we hoped for after the recent price crash”.
The Reynolds herd sold to a top of $1600 with several volume buyers purchasing, and numerous local dairy farmers adding to the mix. Numerous local farmers sell to various companies, not affecting the price fall, and as some had sold chopper cows for good money recently, they were happy to pay for good replacements.
Prior to the dispersal, another dairy farmer sold some of his herd, as he is getting out of milking. The top price here was $1850, and some buyers commented that this was under value.
All in all prices were better than expected with the future of milk prices under a cloud.
