PARTS of north-west Victoria suffered severe dust storms on Tuesday as an active cold front made its way across the state.
While other areas were shielded from raised dust due to weekend rainfall, many parts of the north-west only received between 5-10mm.
The lack of rainfall meant conditions were sufficiently dry for dust to be lifted as the front, with gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour, crossed the state.
The wind was strongest in the south of the state, but parts of the Wimmera and Mallee were worst impacted by the dust.
With many paddocks cultivated for sowing, the wind activity caused more dust to lift than would normally be the case.
At this stage, experts were unsure whether the wind erosion would do any damage to germinating crops.
Very little crop has fully emerged, especially in the drier areas where the wind was at its worst, however there are some small plants up that would be susceptible to wind blasting.
