FLINDERS Ranges council mayor Peter Slattery said it would be up to local residents to decide whether they supported a nuclear waste facility being located in their region.
“Council’s position is that we’re supportive of the information process and the community getting the information about what’s involved,” he said. “But, we’re not going to lead a position.”
One issue that has been raised in the media is the potential for earthquake activity at the site.
But Department of Industry, Innovation and Science resources division head Bruce Wilson said the seismicity of the area had been taken into consideration.
“We’re confident a facility could be built to withstand earthquakes,” he said.
