A cow and calf unit, from the award winning South Australian stud Warrawindi, Penola, has taken out the Supreme Exhibit at the 2016 Limousin National Show and Sale, Wodonga.
Warrawindi Krystal Gem K15, sired by Wulfs Yonkers K682Y, out of Warrawindi Gem 88, is rated in the top one per cent for 200-600 day growth and five pc for milk. The 25 month old cow was paraded with her five month old heifer calf
Judge Steven Pearce said Krystal Gem was a “stunning” cow.
“The cow here was just stunning, you don’t see that, every day of the week,” Mr Pearce said.
“You have got plenty of milk for a two year old heifer, she is not punching out a massive udder, but her udder is functional.
“It’s a great design, teat placements are really neat, the calf is doing well and the cow has depth, she’s got middle, she’s got rib, she is not extreme in any sense - there is a lot to like about that female.”
The cow and calf went to Aruma Limousins, Korunge, South Australia.
Krystal Gem’s dam, Warrawindi Gem, is an Adelaide and Melbourne show Grand Champion.
Krystal Gem recorded figures of +11 for milk and estimated breeding values of +32 for 200 day weight, +59 for 400 and +82 for 600.
The cow also recorded an eye muscle area (EMA) of +2.7, rib fat of +0.2, rump fat +0.4 and intramuscular fat (IMF) of +0.5.
Warrawindi Krystal Gem K15, bred by David and Alison Galpin, Warrawindi Limousin stud, Penola, SA, comes from one of the best female lines in the stud, with her dam, Warrawindi Gem, judged grand champion at Adelaide and Melbourne Royals, and one the highest performing Limousin dams in Australia.
Owner David Galpin, said “it doesn’t matter what breed, she is an outstanding female.
“She is structurally correct, obviously very fertile and with soft silky skin,” he said.
“Her docility is faultless, and we are lucky enough to have two full sisters from our embryo donor program.”
The cow beat the junior and grand champion bull, Birubi Kaiser K140, bred by Annette Tynan, Birubi Limousin stud, Borambola, and paraded by stud manager Glenn Trout.
The junior champion female was awarded to Shalone Paula L291, bred by Eleanor Stewart, Shalone Limousin stud, Ararat, Victoria, while the senior champion bull was awarded to Warrawindi Black Diamond, a full brother to the supreme exhibit, and bred by David and Alison Galpin, Warrawindi Limousins, Penola, SA.
Warrawindi’s Mason Galpen said the cow-calf unit was up against a very good line-up.
“I knew she was good, but I didn’t think that good, so I am very pleased,” Mr Galpin said.
“She has calved early and doing a great job on her calf and is in good nick, too.”
The Grand Champion Bull was taken out by Birubi Kaiser K140 (PF) Homo, polled by DNA, born in September, 2014, and sired by Birubi Sir Gothic G211.
The Senior Champion Bull went to Warrawindi Black Diamond, in the top one per cent for docility and all growth traits, whose sire is Wulfs Yonkers K682Y, out of Warrawindi Gem 88.
The bull is also in the top 10pc for EMA, fat, IMF and index values.
