MANNUM growers Rivapak have decided to think pink with their latest produce.
They are the first Australian growers to produce commercial volumes of Europe’s gourmet onion.
The new variety is the culmination of more than three years of research and cultivation by Rivapak to create the pink onion – a hybrid of the brown and red onion – which has a delicate taste and is slightly milder to its parents.
Rivapak has tripled its production, compared to last year, with the largest crop of the pink onion hitting Coles shelves this week.
Rivapak general manager Greg Dawson said he was excited by the launch of his pink onions at Coles.
“Pink onions are the all-rounders of the onion world as they are milder and sweeter when compared to brown or red onions yet their lower pungency can still deliver a great onion flavour,” he said.
“Pink onions also retain their nice pink colour when cooked or used in salads.”
With a delicate taste and great attributes for cooking, the pink onion has become increasingly popular throughout the United States and Europe which has led to Rivapak introducing the new variety to Australia.
The onion is said to perform well in hot and cold dishes.
Rivapak is made up of three local family farms and has been supplying brown and red onions to Coles for ten years.
