IT was a case of gumboots, akubras, drizabones and other wet weather gear last Friday at Gippsland’s two feature cattle sales at Heyfield.
“Welcome to an old style market, outside in the rain,” said Landmark’s Brad Obst, as the welcome downpour teemed onto 991 cattle, mostly steers, and many hardy buyers. The cattle presented in ideal store condition.
“It was a good sale, the cattle presented well considering the trying circumstances that the producers have experienced,” Mr Obst said.
A pen of 22-month-old grown Angus steers, vendor P Silvester, Dennison, kicked off the sale, sold for $1580.
Chesterfield Pty Ltd, Glenmaggie, sent in a draft of 20 Angus steers, 24mo, Pinora bloodline, that sold to $1460.
Graeme & Joy Stuckey, Leawood Angus, Flynn, sold 16-18mo Angus steers to a top of $1455. G & D Williamson, Dennison, sold 10 Charolais steers, 18mo, to $1440. Willung’s Gerald Feely’s 16mo black baldy and Angus steers, Innesdale bloodline, sold to $1390.
Grown steers sold upwards of $900-$1580, while weaner steers returned a top of $1140 but prices were back a bit for this age group, with most selling $600-$900.
The top of $1140 was received for a pen of seven 10mo Angus weaner steers, vendor Shane Bird, Heyfield.
George Thomas, Sale, received $1080 for a pen of 17 Angus weaner steers, 11mo.
MW & MJ Higgins, Glenmaggie, sold 45 Angus steers, 11mo, Leawood bloodline, to a top of $1010. G & J Edebohls, Cowwarr, sold Angus Limousin Blonde d’Aquitaine weaner steers, 10mo, to $900. A second pen returned $800. There were few feedlots represented – Garrison’s of Swan Hill bought 60 head – but backgrounders and breeders from across Gippsland were very active bidders.
Value held firm for the heifers, with many producers receiving prices equitable to their steers.
Willung’s Gerald Feely sold 10, 16mo Angus heifers, Innesdale bloodline, to $1090. Sale’s George Thomas sold 12 Angus females, 11mo, for $1040, only $40 less than he received for his steers. T Van Dyke sold six 18mo F1 heifers, $1000.
Anthony Higgins sold 16 Angus heifers, 8-9mo, for $760; their brothers sold to $700.
Many heifer prices hovered $600-$800, back on averages across Gippsland; but reflected the store quality of the young females up for sale.
