BASSANO principals Rod and Jane Stewart arrived at their yards on the morning of their Beef Week open day to find several visitors lining up to buy their bulls, which went on sale at 9am. Mr Stewart noted that people had come from farther away this year to purchase bulls, with clients heralding from Camperdown to Mount Gambier.
Beef Week is a major event for the Brook family, ELOORA, Cavendish in terms of marketing their bulls according to co-principal Ray Brook as it allows them to display their bulls for private treaty, Dubbo National and Naracoorte sales. Mr Brook is pictured with return buyer Jeff Spencer, Karangteen, Cavendish who was inspecting some of the bulls available for private sale. Family spokesman Dion Brook said they had sold seven bulls prior to smoko and was expecting to move more before the day ran out.
FRONTERIE'S Clarry Richards and niece Jenny Beal (left and right) visited Fronterie Limousins to scope out potential genetics for their own herd, where they have been crossing Limousin bulls over F1 cows for the vealer market. On show were 10 rising 2-yearo-olds, of which stud principal Greg Frost (centre) said he’d had quite a bit of interest in prior to Beef Week.

This year’s Beef Week field days saw a change of pace for Andrew and Ange Lyons, WILKAH, Vasey as there was a steady flow of visitors throughout the day rather than the usual early rush. This was brought about by a change in their marketing strategy to stage their inaugural bull sale on Friday, Februray 26 rather than sell by private treaty. Mr Lyons said it allowed him more time for a ‘one on one’ with his clients and to better cater for their needs.
WEERAN principal Alec Moore has been at the helm of a lot of changes recently. The Byaduk-based stud has introduced a new battery of mostly Australian-bred Angus sires, which he describes as having a moderate frame but bigger-capacity body. There was a real buzz around David Lyons’ MELVILLE PARK stud, Vasey as the first crop of calves by the $90,000 Days Calibre G74 (P) were available for inspection. These calves are the headline act for their 33rd annual sale on Monday, February 29. Nathan Roberts and David Lyons of MELVILLE PARK with Ross Milne, Elders Stud Stock, Hamilton were pictured inspecting some of the sale bulls.
The Milroy family. MILROY had 15 rising two-year-olds up for sale. Stud co-principal Will Kinghorn, Byaduk, said about 25 per cent of the stud was now polled, after they started a Poll Hereford program five years ago.
MOORA
PEDROSE stud principal Peter Guthrie, Breakaway Creek, paid Barry and Linton Price a visit to their MOORA Broadwater property during Beef Week. The Prices were happy to show off their new Poll Hereford bull Morganvale Jagos, which they purchased last year from the South Australian stud for the sale top price of $9000.
Craig and Jacinta Grant, LINDSAY, Pigeon Ponds welcomed regular South Australian clients Roger Jenkins, Elders, Tintinara, Kevin Cavanagh, Stuart Allen and Bruce Cavanagh, Gramnala, Tintinara to their stud to inspect bulls catalogued for their first on-property sale on Tuesday, March 1. The Grant family normally conduct their annual sale at Casterton, but believe hosting their sale at home will prove beneficial.
