The frightfully dry weather in Tasmania this season has forced the hand of some island cattle breeders with the early commencement of selling to begin next week.
In a specially convened sale at the Powranna complex Roberts and Elders expect to offer a combined tally of 3500 weaner calves: cattle that would be normally sold later in the year. Nick Towns, Roberts, said most of the Tasmanian spring-drop weaners will present in the 150- 250kg weight range with only odd drafts heavier.
He said because of the lighter weights they have received good inquiry from the mainland and locations further north. Mr Towns said agents are hopeful most of the 2015-drop will make 300c/kg meaning plenty of calves should be available between $600- $750 a head.
