The regular fortnightly store cattle market comprised of 1,300 head of steers, heifers and cows with calves at foot with the quality being very mixed.
Quality can c vary a lot at this market, and although it was a little better there remained numerous small pen lots, single sales and a mixture of yearlings to young calves.
Two extra commission buyers attended the sale for a couple of reasons. One was dodging the tennis, the other passing through on the way to Warrnambool the next day. Also, there were no other markets on this day.
That extra competition certainly lifted the price of Angus heifers with an order for breeding females for southern Queensland. Cattle were also purchased for an Inverell client, and some went to north east Victoria.
Agents said this market was dearer for all cattle, after a poor sale the fortnight before. At that market, prices were restricted because of the sheer volume of sales on that day.
S Bottari sold 15 Angus steers from $1200 to the markets highest price of $1460. Most of the yearling steers sold between $1055 and the top price. Equivalent live weight prices ranged from 263-290c/kg. KJ&KF Anderson, Flynn, sold 36 Angus steers from $1130-$1220, to average $1196 per head.
Pens of well bred steers sold to the better competition with buyers trying to fill trucks, some for a long journey. Many of the younger steers sold between $750 & $1220. Liveweight prices equalled 280-332c/kg for most of these steers.
A very good sale pf Hereford steers was that of C&N Downie Ripplebrook, who sold 16 steers (325kg) for $1010, or 311c/kg lwt. RG Bailey, Glen Forbes, sold 51 Angus steers from $970-$1120.
Angus were the focus of one commission buyers operating for the southern Queensland property sold between $835 & $1090 with many going north. Other feedlot buyers concentrated on other breeds paying from $700-900.
Endeavour Corporation, Pakenham sold 18 Charolais heifers from $880-$1090, and HD Middleton, Trafalgar, 30 Angus heifers from $870-$950.
There was a few pens of cows and calves that sold to $1760. D Lawson, Glenburn, sold 7 Angus cows with Hereford cAF for $1700, and Kavendish Investments, Seville, 6 Angus cows with Limousin CAF for $1700. Other outfits sold according to type and quality from $1110-$1620.
