FIRST cross, F1 females were pride and place at Wodonga, with agents offering some excellent quality Angus-Friesian and Hereford-Friesian heifers and calves, PTIC heifers, and unjoined heifers of varying ages.
This was an excellent sale for many of the cattle, although the sale did wane later on in places.
Each year producers offer quality females, and repeat buyers came to the fore making this sale the best so far this year.
Pride of the market was the annual draft from Gino & Rita Mitzi, Genrik Park, Goorambat.
A pen of 9 Hereford-Friesian heifers, 2.5 years with calves at foot (CAF) by stud Limousin bulls made $2400.
Genrik Park sold 47 F1 heifers and calves (3-9 weeks) for an average of $2264, which was $500 higher than their 2015 sale.
The strength of the sale can be shown by the 23 pens of heifers and claves that sold for $2000 or higher.
P&V Hourigan, Everton, sold 27 Angus-Friesian heifers, 2.5yr, with CAF 2-6mths, to $2340, av $2119. TA&JC Hourigan, Everton, sold 15 Angus-Friesian heifers with CAF 10-12 weeks, to $2320, av $2185.
Mindarra Park, Benalla, had the honour of attaining the top price of $2510, and their 34 head averaged $2235.
Demand eased after the top lines of heifers and calves were sold with other sales of heifers and cows of varying size and quality making from $1150-$1900.
F1 heifers, PTIC mostly to Limousin bulls, sold to a similar trend as the calves females, but there were many pens that sold between $1600 & $2220.
GD Poyntz, Wooragee, sold 38 Angus-Friesian heifers, PTIC to Limousin, from $1910-$2180. Ever popular, Charlock Partnership, Charleroi, sold 44 similar heifers from $1910-$2220, av $2054.
Mindarra Park was another large seller offering 74 PTIC F1 heifers, which made to $1840, av $1702. Heifers that were younger and of lighter condition, were best represented by WG&M Thorley, Tarwin Meadows, Tarwin Lower, who sold 145 Angus0Friesian heifers, PTIC to Black Limousin bulls. These sold to $1600, av $1058.
Unjoined heifers sold to a top of $1200 with G&N Ryder, Tawonga, selling 18 Angus-Friesians to that figure, to average $1165. Lemana Park, Moyhu, sold 37 heifers to $1110, av $945, after being washed out in a recent isolated thunderstorm.
WG&M Thorley, Tarwin Lower, sold 170 younger F1 heifers from $430-$740, av $678.
