Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas has moved to reassure the Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) about safeguards on fees and charges for Port of Melbourne (PoM) users.
ADIC chair Simone Jolliffe said the industry was pleased to see last year’s Parliamentary Upper House report address some of the concerns, over the proposed sale of the PoM lease.
“The report’s recommendations reflect industry concerns regarding the impact of the lease on leaseholders," Ms Jolliffe said. “But key issues, including safeguards for leaseholders are not addressed.”
Mr Pallas said the government had worked hard to ensure there was a framework around the lease, which ensured strong competition and better outcomes.
“The proposed regulatory regime for the port, which includes additional economic safeguards, provides for stronger oversight than applies to any other privately operated port in Australia,” Mr Pallas said.
