CARRINGTON Park Angus stud principals have had their breeding ability certified with the sale of a top stud sire to AltaGenetics at $30,000.
Carrington Park Time On B7’s sale precedes the stud dispersal and hands full rights for genetic sales to the Australian and international semen company.
Stud principal Sheryl Atkinson, Drouin, said a semen agreement had been hatched with the semen company in 2007, which gave Alta first option to buy the bull when Carrington Park decided to disperse.
“It’s a big result for a small stud,” she told Stock & Land during a break between Angus breed judging classes at the recent Royal Melbourne Show.
A performer from a young age, B7 snared the reserve champion broadribbon at the Sydney Royal at just 10 months and at 16 months had the largest eye muscle area ever recorded in Australia or New Zealand in the Angus breed.
Measured at 140 square centimetres, it is a record B7 still retains.
“It was pretty amazing and no other bull has come close to it at that age,” Mr Atkinson said.
Now, aged four-and-a-half years, his daughters’ first progeny are on the ground and are displaying his standout genetics.
“The females have beautiful udders and we’re really pleased with his progeny,” Mrs Atkinson said.
By BT Right-Time 24J and out of Carrington Park Empress Z30, B7 has been hotly demanded domestically during the past 18 months.
Now, with his full sale to Alta, orders have come in from Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Beef representative at Alta, Tony Simpson, said with the purchase of the bull, B7 semen would be sold into several countries in North America (US and Canada), South America and the United Kingdom.
And if the bull produces enough, Alta estimates about 100,000 doses will be sold.
Mr Simpson said B7 had fitted its requirements for a bull doing well in the show ring and also providing a genetics outcross containing impressive carcase traits.
“This bull is what the breed needs, with a little bit different pedigree as well,” Mr Simpson said.
Semen from B7 has been marketed for a few years by Alta and now with it being exported, “Australian genetics will be recognised globally”.
Daughters by B7 will be sold at the coming Carrington Park dispersal.
“He’s been used a lot in our stud; we have so much confidence in him.”
Established 15 years ago, Carrington Park has brought the Atkinson family much satisfaction and enjoyment.
They have notched up four years in a row as most successful exhibitor at the Melbourne Royal Show and Mrs Atkinson said the family would be “both happy and sad” to let the stud go.
