SOUTH Australia's government says it will kickstart a $13 million upgrade of the Port Lincoln Airport with a $1.022 million grant from the Regional Development Infrastructure Fund.
Regional Development Minister Gail Gago said the project would deliver significant social and economic benefits to Eyre Peninsula.
“Port Lincoln is South Australia’s busiest regional airport, carrying more than 4000 passengers a week on the Adelaide route,” the Minister said.
“The airport services regular passenger flights, charters, medical transport and general aviation.
“The city is a major regional hub for tourism, farming, fishing, aquaculture and mining.”
Ms Gago said the Rann Government was committed to investing in the growth of South Australia’s regions.
“While the private sector will drive much of the investment in the mining industry, governments have an important role in making sure that public infrastructure keeps pace with these developments,” the Minister said.
“The State Government grant will assist with transport and electricity infrastructure at the airport.
“It will be used for construction of the new taxiway and extension of the apron, also an electrical mains connection to a proposed new terminal.”
“This will help give Port Lincoln maximum flexibility to accommodate different-sized aircraft.”
Port Lincoln Airport owner, the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula, has welcomed the Government’s assistance.
“The grant will be used to assist with development of infrastructure works, including upgrade of the taxiway and apron to accommodate the air services provided by Regional Express and Qantaslink,” Mayor Julie Low said.
“The infrastructure improvements are part of a major airport upgrade, which will also include a new modern terminal building, roads and a car park.
“Council believes this project will create a fresh image for travellers coming to Eyre Peninsula and Port Lincoln, providing a significant boost to the local tourism industry.”
