PRELIMINARY site investigation works in Gawler East will begin today as part of planning for a future road link that will cater for expected future growth in the area.
Transport Minister Patrick Conlon said this investigation will determine the preferred corridor for constructing a local link road between Potts Road and land held by Lend Lease bordering Calton Road, Gawler East.
“The preliminary investigations will include engineering surveys, environmental investigations and geotechnical works that will decide the most feasible route for a local link road between Potts Road and the land held by Lend Lease bordering Calton Road, Gawler East,” he said.
“These works reaffirm the State Government’s commitment to supporting planned development in
the Gawler East urban growth area, as identified in the 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide, the Gawler Growth Areas Transport Framework, 2009 and announced in last year's State Budget.
“Once constructed this road link would greatly assist in catering for expected future housing growth in the booming Gawler East area.
“Officers from the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, in conjunction with the Town of Gawler, will carry out the preliminary site investigation works over coming months.
“The investigations will occur within State Government owned land and some privately owned land between Potts Road and the land currently held by Lend Lease, bordering Calton Road.”
State Member for Light, Tony Piccolo has welcomed the announcement stating that the link road would not only serve the new Gawler East development but also help reduce through traffic originating to the east of the town.
“The link road is a critical piece of infrastructure that will help the town manage its growth,” Mr Piccolo said.
“After 35 years of talk it is great to see concrete steps taking place to ensure the road is built.”
Mr Conlon said that the local member, Mr Piccolo has been a strong advocate for the building of the road, and has successfully lobbied to having the road built sooner than originally planned in the DPA.
It is expected staff will continue these preliminary site investigation works at various times throughout the first half of 2012.
