SINGAPORE beef imports increased in 2012, rising one per cent on 2011, with imports from Australia experiencing a significant jump.
Meat and Livestock Australia reports Singapore's chilled beef imports increased 11 per cent year-on-year to 4640 tonnes swt, while frozen beef intake remained steady, with 22,797 tonnes swt imported.
While imports from some major supplying countries declined during 2012, imports from Australia surged to 13,803 tonnes swt – up 22pc year-on-year and 60pc on the five-year average.
Despite Singapore decreasing total frozen boneless beef imports by three per cent year-on-year during 2012 (19,666 tonnes swt), imports from Australia rose 20pc to 8629 tonnes swt.
Australia’s imported beef market share in Singapore increased from 42pc in 2011 to 50pc in 2012.
In contrast, imports from Brazil and New Zealand fell to 5254 tonnes swt, down four per cent on 2011, and 4770 tonnes swt, down 24pc on 2011, respectively.
