RAIN across East Gippsland and the High Country has brought smiles to many farmers' faces and brought speculative buyers along to Bairnsdale store cattle sale on Friday.
Total yarding was 1382 cattle and while there were well bred lines of offer, there was also some ordinary cattle.
The market began slowly, with prices rising for stand-out lines of stock or the occasional single animal or pen.
Barry Keat of Butchers Ridge sent in a line of Hereford Shorthorn, Charolais and black baldy steers, 16-18-months-old, that sold to $808.
John Hall of Lindenow was dispersing his breeding herd after selling his property to the expanding vegetable farm industry in the Bairnsdale district.
Mr Hall sold his 85 Angus heifers and cows, PTIC to calve in July, to $990.
Dean Campbell of Finchley Pastoral Co near Delegate sent in a line of Hereford steers, 14-months-old, that sold to $715.
Meryl Reed of Melrose Herefords, Cann River, sold 35 weaner steers to $770.
A pen of 15 young Angus steers from DL&GL Baird, about 320kg, sold for $715.
One of the standout pens was put up by John and Nola Ross, trading as CJ Pendergast & Co/Omeo Station - very keen bidding saw Sekove and Tarek Koroisamamunu buy 17 Angus and black baldy weaner steers for $412 each.
