ANYTHING deemed as being outside of spot-on found the going tough at Kyneton store cattle sale on Wednesday, despite a good attendance of travelling agents.
Offering a mixed selection of 900 head, McGrath Rodwell Livestock principal Kieran McGrath said sales of larger grown steers, in particular, met a flat inquiry.
He estimated rates paid were 10-15c/kg lwt below the sale of a month ago "although quality was not that flash".
The market then proceeded to be patchy as selling progressed to the pens of better bred and younger steers.
Some lots met good competition, while other "sold not so well", Mr McGrath said.
Vendor North Melbourne Institute of Technology (NMIT) sold a yard of Angus-Charolais steers, 443kg at $765, while R Baker sold 13 Angus, 398kg, at $692.
These were considered among the better sales of grown steers to realise 172-173c/kg lwt while a pen of 12 Angus steers, 302kg, offered Tinnara made $616 a head or 204c/kg lwt.
Another pen of NMIT Angus steers, 350kg, made $650, while S&D Chapman sold Angus Charolais weaner (unweighed) at $560.
These realised an estimated 207c/kg lwt.
Other pens of lighter unweighed steers made $400-$545 and included a draft of Lawsons-blood Angus weaners, Sept-Oct 13-drop, raised by the students of Salesian College "Rupertswood North" Sunbury that made to $465 and averaged $430 a head.
These were estimated to weigh about 200kg liveweight.
Dean Coxon, Elders, said the market for heifers didn't set records either: missing the aggressive feeder competition of the previous sale.
Rates he said were considered $50-$80 a head lower however the line-up was also said to be well in arrears of the previous sale.
