On Wednesday, Kyneton combined agents offered a heavier and better conditioned draft of cattle at the monthly store sale.
Seventy registered buyers competed briskly to secure some very handy cattle with the market strong to firmer, saleyards superintendant Mat Gordon said.
Heavy steers 400 plus kilograms sold from $1270 to $1590, or prices equivalent to 222-320 cents per kg. Weaner types weighing 300-400 kg sold from $880 to $ 1210, or 263-379c/kg.
At the lighter end, a pen of Angus steers weighing 295kg made 328c/kg, while a pen of Charolais-cross, weighing 270kg made 348c/kg.
The highest price on a per head basis was received by Graham and Betty Boyer, Glenhope, whose pen of eight Hereford steers sold to $1590. A large draft of one mark Angus weaner steers offered by Roberts and Bassett, also from the Glenhope area, topped the sale on a cents per kg basis with one pen making $1210 or 379c/kg.
These steers had been yard weaned, double vaccinated with 5 in 1 drenched and received an A, D, vitamin E and B12 shot.
Cow and calve numbers were back on the previous sale, however there was some nice smaller lines. The top price was $ 1700 for a pen of eight Angus cows with Angus-Limousin cross calves at-foot.
A quality line up of heifers saw sales ranging from $ 1300 for a pen of 545kg Herefords equal to 238c/kg offered by Graham and Betty Boyer to a pen of Charolais cross heifers offered by JH&WI Forrest, weighing 258kg at $ 780 or 302c/kg. A pen of 10 Angus heifer weaners account P McKenzie weighing 360kg sold to $1030 or 286c/kg with most heifers making in the range of 280c/kg.
The majority of cattle went to feedlots or backgrounders with very limited restocker activity. There was activity by buyers from the north, north-west and eastern parts of the state with minimal local activity.
The final monthly Kyneton Store Sale for 2015 will be on Wednesday, December 16 at 11am.
Special sales in 2016 will commence with the annual Kyneton first-cross ewe sale on Friday January 8, followed by the cattle weaner sale on Wednesday January 20. Normal monthly store sales will resume on Wednesday January 27.
