What has been likened to a tornado has ripped through a town in Victoria's far north, tearing roofs from up to 10 houses and leaving three uninhabitable.
Severe thunderstorms lashed Victoria's north-east and Gippsland regions on Sunday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, flash flooding and hailstorms.
In Strathmerton, on the border of Victoria and NSW near Cobram, up to 10 houses lost their roofs.
Local newspaper The Strathmerton Standard posted several photos to their Facebook page of damaged houses on Denison Street.
The State Emergency Service said at least seven homes were severely damaged when the storm struck about 3pm.
Photos showed tin roofs ripped from houses, uprooted trees, collapsed fences and debris strewn across driveways.
The storms also brought down powerlines and caused localised flooding.
Strathmerton residents said the storm hit with little warning, sending them running for cover.
"I heard a big sort of swelling rumble and I just picked up my little boy and ran down the hallway and it hit, and just lifted off the roof and took off the verandah," one resident told ABC News.
Another resident said they rushed inside their home as "tin was flying in the air".
A video posted to Facebook shows the "multi-vortex tornado" also tearing through Nathalia, south-west of Strathmerton.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Newham said damage in Nathalia appeared to be the result of a tornado. Wild winds in Strathmerton, however, were more likely the result of a strong squall.
Storms hit southern NSW, as well as western Queensland, at the weekend as a result of a band of moisture extending over eastern Australia.
The SES responded to 235 calls for help across Victoria's north, with crews in the Numurkah and Shepparton districts being the busiest.
Winds of 89km/h were recorded in Shepparton on Sunday afternoon, while winds of up to 117km/h were recorded in southern NSW.
The wild weather cleared by the early hours of Monday morning, with showers easing and a top of 18 degrees forecast for Melbourne.
On Tuesday, Melbourne can expect a partly cloudy day for Cup Day, with a top of 22 degrees.
