More regional centres added to NBN rollout

All but 130 in the Brookton area are scheduled to receive fibre-to-the-node landline phone and broadband internet connections, with the work scheduled to begin in 2017.

The Brookton premises will be serviced by fixed wireless internet scheduled to be installed in the fourth quarter next year.

The city of Albany and its suburbs in the Great Southern is the largest of the new regional WA rollouts scheduled on the plan.

Work on getting fibre-optic cable to nodes around Albany to connect to existing copper wire to about 16,500 premises is due to start in the first quarter 2017.

Port Hedland, Dampier, Exmouth, Wickham, Roebourne, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Newman in the Pilbara have been added to the work schedule for 2017, with the rollout due to start at Port Hedland in the first quarter.

Carnarvon and Denham residents in the Gascoyne can expect the rollout to begin in the second half of 2017.

In the Central Wheatbelt, Merredin township can expect work on the fibre-to-the-node rollout to begin in the first half of 2017 and be extended to Kellerberrin and Southern Cross in the second half of the year.

In the Goldfields, Kambalda West has been added to the rollout plan for the first half of 2017.

The proposed works plan does not include areas serviced by satellite.

Under the rollout plan, more than three quarters of the WA fixed-line footprint connection is expected to be completed or being built by September 2018, according to the NBN.

"This is exciting news for the residents in the WA suburbs, regions and towns added to our construction schedule who have been keen for some time to get an indicative timeframe for when the NBN network is expected to be rolled out in their area,'' said WA corporate affairs manager Philippa Perry.

About 114,000 premises in WA are already able to connect to the network.
