29 of 48 rams sold to $2400, av $851
IT was a steady sale at the Melrose annual On-Property sale last Thursday at Nurrabiel. With a total of 29 March shorn, 16 month old rams selling to a high of $2400, av $851.
DJ & JA Guinane, Gheringhap, buying through Elders Geelong, paid the top price for Lot 13, 14CC040 a 16mth old poll ram.
With fleece measurements of 17.57 micron, 3.41 standard deviation, 19.4 co-efficient of variation and 100 per cent comfort factor.
Des Guinane has been purchasing Melrose blood for generations.
He originally purchased rams from Warrens Grandfather, Tom Lewis, Kooringa Merino and Poll Merino Stud for many years.
When that operation finished Mr Guinane moved his buying to Melrose, where he continues to seek out top Poll rams.
“I buy Melrose rams for their Micron range,” Mr Guinane said.
The wool clips are uniform, forming one line which is important. The temperaments of the rams and their progeny are great.”
Ethandune Pastoral, Coleraine, buying through Elders Casterton were the volume buyers on the day, purchasing a total of seven rams to av $600.
Geoff Waters, Ethandune Pastoral has been buying rams from Melrose for 12 years.
“I love the style of their sheep, they suit my drier country. I keep coming back as the rams bred good, consistent, health and clean sheep.” Mr Waters said.
Other volume buyers on the day were JJ & KD Pola, buying through AWN Ballarat, purchased five rams to a top of $1600 to av $920, AJ & KM McErvale, buying through Elders Ballarat, purchased four rams to $1000 twice to av $800, Noremac Partnership, buying through Elders Hamilton, purchased four rams to a top av $600.
Warren Russel, Melrose was pleased with the rams that they presented.
”Our rams are well grown with and average weight of 93kg,” Mr Russell said.
“I am pleased that buyers get the rams that want.”
There was a bout of post-sale action, with the Russell family clearing more sale rams and rams outside of the sale team.
