MILDURA, Vic, will play host to the citrus industry's brightest minds and newest technology next month when the Citrus Technical 2015 Forum and Field Day comes to town on March 16-17.
More than 300 members of the industry are expected to attent the two-day event. The forum will tackle a range of topics targeted to citrus growers and feature a dedicated postharvest technology seminar designed especially for packers – a first for the Australian industry.
Citrus Australia’s market development manager Andrew Harty said the event will provide growers and packers with a glimpse into future technologies and provide a platform for researchers to showcase their work.
“The event is definitely not to be missed by anyone working within the citrus sector,” he said. “The two days will cover a broad range of topics carefully curated for the industry – presented through lectures, workshops, orchard and packing shed demonstrations,” he said.
“New technology is the lifeblood of any primary industry, and the citrus industry is no exception. Unless we continue to invest in better ways to grow, pack and market our products to the world, we will get left behind.”
California Citrus Mutual president Joel Nelsen will provide a keynote address on his industry’s campaign to control Huanglongbing. Other keynote speakers include Plant & Food Research NZ's Jim Walker, who has pioneered ultra-low residue pest control for export apples, and California postharvest specialist, Dave Sorenson, an industry legend in postharvest services.”
Forum sessions will run concurrently across both days, and citrus growers and packers are encouraged to review the detailed program to map out their day. The event will also include an extensive trade show where attendees can network with local businesses and industry experts.
“Some of the program sessions overlap, and we encourage those thinking of attending to check the program before registering," Mr Harty said. "For those who would like to cover all topics, why not bring along a colleague and share the load.”
Citrus Australia hopes the event will become a fixture on the citrus industry calendar and will complement Citrus Australia’s Market Outlook Forum held every other year.
