LIGHTENING tore through the fabric of the sky to provide a dramatic background for the Bucko Billy Rodeo Bull Thunder Down Under Bull Ride Spectacular held at the Charters Towers Showgrounds on Saturday night.
The Bucko Billy Rodeo has become an essential part of the Australia Day weekend in Charters Towers, and after the event was cancelled last year due to rain, the support shown by a strong crowd and a large list of riders showed the resiliency of the event.
Organiser of the rodeo event, John Moss, said it proved how strong rodeo was in the North with spectators always eager to watch an exciting evening of bullrides with the possibility of catching a glimpse of some of the future stars of the sport.
Bull contractor Darryl Kleier provided a great selection of bucking bulls for the evening. They showed no mercy on what proved to be a nigh on impossible night for the riders to stay in the saddle for the eight.
Novice rider Russell Holzwart managed to assert his dominance over his bull to the tune of 70 points, but he would be the first and the last to score.

The rodeo was completed by 9pm with the crowd staying on well after the main event finished to have a dance to the great sound of 52-Pickup.
Mr Moss wished to thanks all the sponsors from Charters Towers, Townsville, Home Hill, Mackay, Tolga and all the people from the surrounding districts for their continued support of the event.
“I’d also like to say a special thanks to all the competitors for there continued support over the past 18 years,” he said.
