BIDS rang out thick and fast from the outset of Wurrook’s annual on property sale, where all 91 rams offered found buyers.
A huge son of Merryville Hamilton Giant topped the ledger, selling to the Davidson family from Lake Bolac.
The ram had a dense 19.4-micron fleece measuring 2.7 standard deviation and comfort factor of 99.7 per cent; but it was his stature that saw him standing squarely over the top of the pen that attracted the buying interest.
James Davidson and son Andrew have filled their annual order at Wurrook for many years, also buying the top priced lot two years ago for $7000.
They run 5000 breeding Merino ewes and buy high quality rams to breed their own, Andrew Davidson said.
Wurrook principal Paul Walton said Merryville Hamilton Giant had bred very well for the stud, with this year’s lambs on the ground by the sire already shaping up well for 2015.
Another of his sons sold for $3700 at lot three to Tiree Pastoral Co, Benalla, via Elders agent Rex Bennett; while M J Cheeseman, Carngham, paid $3400 for it’s half-brother.
M&F Pilley, Uwamalla, Hill End, made their journey from NSW worthwhile, buying three rams from the top of the catalogue to $3200, av $2733.
Five buyers loaded more five or more rams, including GJ Boyle, who put a solid floor in the sale buying 11 rams at $800 each.
Overall the draft sold for an average of $1475.
“I think it was as good a sale as we could expect to have in the current conditions,” Mr Walton said.
He was also pleased with the mounting interest in the poll rams from the stud, of which all 10 sold to $2200, av $1320.
