The Australian Wool Network (AWN) charity wool auction, held on the last selling day of the financial year, raised more than $13,500 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, easily beating last year’s $9490.
In Sydney, the total for the three bales was $6666.20 and the successful bidders were New England Wool and Tech Wool Trading. In Melbourne the two bales raised $3823.92 and the successful bidders were New England Wool and Donghai, while in Fremantle the auction totalled $3127.55 and the successful bidder was by Chinatex (Australia) Pty. Ltd.
AWN managing director John Colley praised the generosity of the wool industry for putting their hands in their pockets to help the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
“This has been the last wool sale of what has been a very exciting year and since 2002 these charity auctions have raised $94,617 to the Royal Flying Doctor Service,” he said.
Victoria based AWN wool technical manager Kelvin Shelley AWN's ongoing support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service was a great way to help the organisation that played such a vital role in looking after AWN's clients and their communities living in rural and remote areas.
The two charity bales sold at Melbourne including a bale of 16.4-micron, 71 millimetre long "European type" (according to Mr Shelley) wool with a Schlumberger dry yield (SCH DRY) of 75.5 per cent and strength of 42 Newtons per kilotex (Nkt).
The second bale's measurements were 18.1M, 91mm in length, 70.2pc yield and 32Nkt in strength.
Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria communications manager Lucy Sinclair said it was fantastic to have the support of AWN and the wool selling centres.
"Funding like this is essential to the Royal Flying Doctor Service to keep flying," Ms Sinclair said.
In Victoria, the Royal Flying Doctor Service does emergency, patient transfer and primary health care services, and Ms Sinclair said it was working through recently published government data to ensure it was providing the most effective services including in which regions and types of healthcare, which could include addressing more dental and mental health needs.
