THE Jackson family were thrilled with their annual ram sale at Moyston last week, when 90 Border Leicester rams and 40 Poll Dorset rams all sold to average $1080 for the 130 lots offered.
Return stud clients Rodney and Tracey Willmott, Hanookra, Lucindale, South Australia, purchased the top-priced Border Leicester ram at $5500 – a son of Jackson Top Gun, who was the supreme interbreed long wool ram at the 2012 Hamilton Sheepvention. The ram was an outcross to complement the sires Hanookra bought last year.
The Hobson family, Burrumbeet, also bought a stud sire.
The Border Leicester flock rams sold quickly, with clients old and new bidding up to $1700.
Coniston Pastoral Co, Ararat, paid to $1700 and av $1650 for two rams; while Millard Farms. Byaduk, took three to $1600.
Volume buyers included Robert Funk, Dunkeld, who picked up 11 rams to $1400 three times; and RJ&MR Chenery, Linton, who took 14 rams to $1300 and was mainly selecting from the twin rams.
The Poll Dorset rams sold to $1500 with Pat Millear, Willaura, being the strongest buyer, finishing up with eight rams, including three at the $1500 top-price.
David George, Lake Goldsmith was another to buy in numbers, taking eight to $1000; while R&M&T Burger, Glenthompson, selected rams from both breeds offered, paying to $1300.
