CENTRAL Goldfields stud Glenore had a ripping ram sale last week, with a 100 per cent clearance of its offering of 86 Poll Dorset rams.
Peter and Gillian Cain, principals of the Carisbrook stud, said strong repeat demand put a solid floor in sales.
The average price was $898, with a top of $3700 paid by another stud breeder.
Mr Cain said two or three rams went to stud buyers, with the rest going out as commercial flock rams.
The top price was paid by the Matthews family of the Brimgower Poll Dorset stud at Brimpaen, south of Horsham.
Other buyers also travelled a good distance to get hold of rams, the Nicholls family of Stradbroke, south of Sale in Gippsland, paid $2000 for another of the top priced rams.
There was also solid support from Glenore's regular array of local clients, with Claude Jennings snapping up six rams, av $725, Mark Ford buying six rams av $600; and Major Court buying three rams, including a purchase at $1200.
Mr Cain said despite the large number of rams offered there was no buyer who took home more than six rams.
"It was a nice even spread, a lot of people got their two or three rams which was good," he said.
Along with the local area, Mr Cain said there was good support from both the Bendigo and Ballarat area.
Mr Cain said buyers were happy with the traits of his rams, which include early maturity and evenness.
"We're trying to get them with good length and a good carcase shape.
He said he had no lambing problems at home.
"We've got the shoulders right for easy lambing."
