As the trend continues to more dual-purpose sheep, Australian Wool Network has expanded its direct buying activities that can handle these wool types.
The AWN has opened branches in Yarram and Edenhope in its wool buying division, which already has branches in Deniliquin, NSW, Hamilton and Mount Gambier, South Australia.
The service buys wool oddments such as bags, butts, light bales even daggy wool direct from the grower.
The service has been picked up by smaller and hobby farmers, as well larger woolgrowers who have scaled down their wool operations.
Division manager Ron Creek said the need for the service grew along with the increase of dual-purpose sheep.
“The trend towards developing breeds for meat as well as wool also means that we can easily handle these wool types via our wool buying division,” Mr Creek said.
Steve Harvey has been recruited to the Edenhope branch and Troy Underwood and Adrian Nuttall to Yarram.
Mr Creek said expanding the wool buying services in Victoria was in direct response to a growing need from farmers wanting an easier solution and quicker return for smaller clips and shed clean outs.
“Our wool buying team can promptly come out with a truck or ute to pick up the wool and the grower receives a quicker return than through the auction system," he said.
Mr Creek said AWN’s wool buying division was a permanent extension of its larger wool marketing services.
