IT WAS a valuable hat-trick for the overall winners of the Gippsland Sheep Breeders Association's wether production trial at the East Gippsland Field Days recently.
Steve and Lisa Harrison have now won Gippsland's three-year wether production trial three times in a row – making them the overall winner for the past nine years.
The Harrisons own Bindawarra Merino stud at Giffard West and last Friday's win at the East Gippsland Field Days was confirmation their commercial breeding strategy is paying off.
"It shows we're on the right track and our sheep consistently perform," Mr Harrison said.
"In the past three years, our flock cut one kilogram more than the average and were a finer micron than the average of the sheep in the trial."
Second place went to John and Trevor Bennett of Everton Upper and third place was won by Doug and Lou Pemberton of Nicholson River Merino Stud, Nicholson.
At last year's trial, the Harrisons led by $0.46 over the Bennetts' sheep.
This year, they won by $1.07, with the average carcase weight of their sheep tipping them over the finish line – demonstrating their consistent results across carcase weight, micron and fleece value.
There were 18 Merino flocks competing in the wether trial, from throughout Gippsland and North East Victoria.
