WEST Wyalong School students dominated the Angora Goat judging at Bendigo today.
The school, which is located near Wagga Wagga, NSW, received the prestigious champion buck and champion doe titles at the Australian Sheep & Wool Show.
Agricultural teacher Mandy Statham said her students had prepared 10 goats for the event.
West Wyalong has managed its own Angora Goat stud, Willow Glen, since 1990.
The school also runs the New South Wales agricultural curriculum, where the kids get a chance to take part in a hands-on education program - involving everything from artificial insemination to preparing animals for show.
Ms Statham said the Mohair from the goats was mainly sold through the auction system, but a portion goes to the hand spinners and weavers market.
She said the agricultural program at the school was invaluable.
“Many students go on to do veterinary science, or they go back into primary production,” she said.
“The program really helps kids to gain confidence and self-esteem.”
