Deppeler Suffolks stud of Derrinallum took out the breed’s top ram and ewe.
Rebecca Deppeler, daughter of Douglas who established the stud in 1970, was pleasantly surprised to get the broad ribbons.
“We’ve had wins before at the (Australian) Sheep & Wool Show but not for a number of years, it was a shock,” Ms Deppeler said.
“It makes all the hard work pay off.”
She said a resurgence of interest in Suffolks in recent years thanks to their quick growth and poor wool prices meaning the discount for their black points seeming less important, made it even more difficult to win.
Judge Craig Mitchell, a Werneth Suffolks breeder, awarded champion ram to a 1.5-year-old and pointed out his positive sire outlook and good structure.
The one-year-old ewe that won champion ewe was following her dam’s show success, who was a champion show ewe at the Royal Melbourne and Geelong shows.
