THE Dean-Newlyn team have won the annual Young Farmer Challenge at the Royal Melbourne Show.
The team consisted of captain Jake Guthrie, Cameron Hepburn, Robert Glen, Emma Gull and Alysha Pottenger, representing Dean, Victoria.
Conducted annually by the RASV in partnership with Victorian Young Farmers, the Young Farmer Challenge is an entertaining, fast-paced event that promotes and celebrates excellence in farming and recognises the next generation of farmers.
In teams of four, farmers aged 16 to 30, raced against the clock to complete a series of challenges to demonstrate a breadth of technical skills used by farmers in everyday field activities, for example stacking hay, leading an alpaca and reversing a ute.
RASV CEO Mark O’Sullivan said the Young Farmer Challenge recognises and celebrates young farmers’ involvement in the agricultural industry.
“The Young Farmer Challenge showcases the talents of the modern day farmer, providing young people with a unique opportunity to compete against their peers in front of thousands of people at the Royal Melbourne Show," he said.
“We congratulate Dean-Newlyn for claiming the title at the Young Farmer Challenge, which celebrates and rewards the next generation of farmers."
As the Victorian winner, Dean-Newlyn will be sponsored by the RASV to represent the State at the Australian Young Farmer Challenge during the 2015 Royal Adelaide Show and takes home a $4000 prize pool today.
The Australian Young Farmer Challenge is a national initiative developed by the Australian Council of Agricultural Societies (ACAS) and run by agricultural societies and organisations across Australia, including the RASV.
