THE second day of the Victorian weaner sales saw an unexpected improvement in prices.
Wodonga Independent Agents continued their blue ribbon sale today yarding just less than 3000 head of Hereford, Angus-cross and Euro bred cattle.
In places, the weaner steer price was $30-$40 dearer on the day before, despite the yarding being of a more mixed quality.
Heifer prices were also dearer on day two, with strong competition in the Charolais heifers and good competition on the other Euro-cross heifers.
The top-price weaner steers were sold by Neil and Trevor Ralston, Hollywood, Euroa, with 20 Hereford steers that were also awarded Rural Finance’s best presented pen.
The yard-weaned Kanimbla-blood lots sold at $745, or 200 cents a kilogram, while a second pen of 20 of their brothers made $682, 206c/kg.
Paull & Scollard’s Tim Robinson said buying support increased today, with more commission buyers present as well as local butchers and graziers.
Mr Robinson said the better 300kg steers were hitting the 190-200c/kg mark, while Euro cross heifers made up to 160c/kg.
Glencoe Pastoral, Holbrook, were volume vendors, offering about 200 head, and were rewarded for the good presentation of their cattle by achieving the top heifer price of $590 for a pen of black baldies.
