Winter has really hit in Gippsland and this was evident at the Leongatha store sale yesterday, with agents offering a very small and mixed quality yarding.
Landmark agent Stuart Jenkins said the competition was strong, especially for better-bred steers, which he said were $40-$50 dearer.
Stuart also said heifer prices were another $30-$40.
EJ&BA Price, Korumburra, sold 2 yearling steers for the sale’s top price of $830, and A,J,P&JM McCormack, Ranceby, nine steers at $755.
Younger steers sold well, as only small lines of vendor bred steers were offered.
M&M Stephens, Moe, sold nine Limousin steers for $755, and K&F Whelan, Outtrim, 14 Charolais steers for $672. Both of these sales were very good, but some of the lightweight steers sold very well.
Merlewood Angus, Mirboo North, sold 26 Angus steers to $600, to average $568, which equated to liveweight prices well over 230 cents per kilogram liveweight.
Lionel Holdings, Yanakie, sold 21 Angus-Limousin steers to $525, av $468.
These were the few larger lines of steers with most other steers selling between $390 and $640.
A few single and small sales of heifers sold to a top of $750, most form $530.
Other heifers sold mostly between $270 & $460, the Merlewood Angus heifers sold for $405.
The Firs, Korumburra, 22 heifers to $460, av $435.
BW&A Chapman, Toora, sold a pair of cows and calves for $900, which was stop price for a very small selection. KW&RF Battersby, Strzelecki, sold 3 Angus bulls from $1850-$1900.
