VICTORIA’S week long heatwave didn’t help cattle numbers or prices at the Wangaratta weaner sale today, with calves making to a top of $656.
This was achieved by WWW Management, Warrenbayne, with 20 Welcome Swallow-blood Angus steers, 10 months and 373 kilograms, equating to 176 cents/kg.
The same vendor was awarded the best presented heifer pen of the sale and sold the 16 sisters their top steer pen at $520, the highest price made for Angus heifers.
Landmark auctioneer Daniel Fischer said steers sold between 170-185c/kg.
“This was in line with recent weaner sales in the area, but heifers struggled because of a lack of large well-bred feature lines,” he said.
“The limited number of weaners yarded didn’t attract many outside buyers – we saw one order from Yea and one from Albury, but that is as far and wide as it went.”
Sean Creighton, Euroa, was awarded the Wangaratta livestock agents best presented steer pen of the sale with 16 Shorthorn-Charolais steers, 391kg.
The thumping calves sold at $650 to John Hourigan, Greta, who will take them home to fatten.
Mr Hourigan also purchased the top-priced Angus pen, sold by WWW Management, and said both lots of steers were value for dollar.
CR&DJ Henderson, Killawarra, sold 27 Shorthorn-Poll Hereford steers, averaging 357kg and Gairnshiel and Wyuna-bld, to a top of $640, av $593.
Corcoran Parker auctioneer Justin Keane said with some sales cancelled this week because of the heat, the agents were cautious before the sale, but it turned out ok.
“All in all with what’s been happening I don’t think it has been much different to the north as far as Wodonga and in the south at Hamilton, sitting at that 175-180c/kg range for the black steers,” he said.
