Warm and sunny weather brought out a large crowd for a small winter yarding at Pakenham today.
While the yarding was very mixed in quality, a good percentage of the offering was well bred steers and heifers.
Bulldog Run, Merricks, sold seven Angus steers (426 kilograms liveweight) for $860, and E Devers, Woori Yallock, 13 Angus steers to $895, average $810.
Two feature drafts of steers were noted. Hanging Rock Partnership, Newham, offered 22 Angus steers, by Son of Alliance 187, which sold to $705, av $653, or 220c/kg lwt.
A&D O’Mahony, Bayles, sold 21 Angus steers, 8-9mth, by Southern Fork stud Angus bulls, to $667, av $629.
Few pens of yearling steers were penned, which created some strong competition from bullock fatteners, and processors.
R&J Chatfield, Cora Lynn, sold the top price pen at $920, for eight Angus steers, 2 years-old, and 10 steers, 12mth, for $620.
GG Gray, Moe, sold 10 Angus steers for $792.
While heifers sold at dearer rates compared to the previous sale, there remained a marked difference between them and their brothers.
Heifers sold from $190 for young, poor condition heifers, to $575 for eight yearling Hereford heifers, offered by R&J Chatfield, Cora Lynn.
RL McPhie, Berry’s Creek, sold 15 Angus heifers to $355, av $353.
Hanging Rock P/ship, sold 18 Angus heifers to $470, av $452.
