A DECENT consignment of weaner steers met an indifferent market at Colac on Monday.
Twelve February-March-drop Angus weaners, R Sambucco, topped the sale at $725, as 350-400 kilogram cattle averaged between 165-180 cents per kilogram and lighter (300-350kg) drafts av 175-190c/kg.
Charolais-cross cattle were a little further back, with seven Angus-Charolais weaner steers, consigned by R&A Spence, topping at $680.
Hereford cattle were good buying, with 300-360kg cattle selling between $550-580.
Charles Stewart auctioneer Jamie McConachy said large yardings at last week’s Casterton and Hamilton weaner sales contributed to a subdued Colac market.
“When you’ve got so many weaner cattle hitting the market it does make an impact – particularly when you’re only relying on Victoria,” Mr McConachy said.
“Without the north (northern Australian buyers) we’re probably providing too many numbers at once.”
Agents penned 2800 cattle.
