A large crowd influenced a very strong sale at Leongatha last Thursday.
Prices were at least another $50 dearer for all classes of cattle, which included a large percentage of crossbred steers, and plain condition cattle.
Competition came only from the broader Gippsland region, with two or three processors and one feedlot buyer completing the large crowd.
There were several small drafts of good quality breeders cattle, and these sold to the best competition, setting some very strong results.
D&B Kalladay, Gelliondale, sold a range of older and younger steers with six Angus steers, two-years-old, setting the sale top price of $1018.
The 40 younger Angus steers sold between $590-$760, and nine crossbred steers made $655.
Crossbred steers came in many shapes and sizes, and sol from $655-$840.
W&J Peters, Wonthaggi, sold 18 Angus-Friesian steers to $840, to average $797; while GR&TJ Bird, Lance Creek, sold 13 Friesian steers, 2yo, for $705.
Medium weight steers of good breeding sold very well making from $700-$845.
Some weights were displayed, and those that could be measured in liveweight terms ranged from 200-245 cents per kilogram.
I Montgomery, Inverloch, sold 43 Yancowinna-blood Angus steers to $845, av $794.
P&D Calafiores, Mirboo North, sold 25 Leawood-bld Angus steers to $800, av $738.
Pilkington & Toohey, Sandy Point, sold 22 Angus and Angus-Hereford steers to $772, av $743.
From here on there was a blurring of the edges between weights, size and prices.
T&C Hulls, Leongatha South, offered 40 young Angus steers, and although there were no weights displayed they sold to extreme demand.
Selling to $760, and av $722, liveweight price estimates ranged from 270-300c/kg lwt.
