STRONGER demand for steers and better competition for heifers created a good sale for Corcoran Parker, Elders and Landmark agencies at the Wodonga Feature Angus Weaner sale on January 9.
Vendors should be happy with prices which are in line with other weaner sales, but slightly dearer than the opening sale at Wodonga last Thursday, according to Elders auctioneer, Brett Shae.
Mr Shae said numbers were down following the current price trends but the extra competition for heifers created a stronger sale.
A small selection of yearling steers sold to a top of $848, and WN McDonald, Rosewhite, was the happy vendor. Most yearlings sold from $630-$730.
Feedlot competition was strong and this aided a solid sale for the weaned steers, while mostly locals picked up the un-weaned steers.
There was a premium steers with a line of 588 steers from Davilak Pastoral CO, Mansfield selling to $718, or 186 cents per kilogram liveweight. Lighter and younger steers sold mostly from $480-$560 with some almost reaching the equivalent of 200c/kg.
Successful buyers of heifers came from as far as Devonport, Tasmania with Warrnambool and Mt Gambier in South Australia competition against feedlots and local buyers. The best pen of heifers sold for $590 with most selling from $450-$530.
