SMALL but nice was the best way to describe the monthly Yea store sale last Friday, with 929 head penned.
The weather was cold and overcast, but numerous local and district producers and agents, competed against two feedlot buyers, two processors.
Despite being the middle of winter most of the cattle were in good stead, which aided the strong competition. The sale opened with a small pen of Hereford steers, which were quoted as 4 teeth. These steers were in plain condition and sold for $760.
For that point on a few pens of yearlings steers were offered (14-20 months), then from 7-10mths, and a few pens of late drop calves. Feedlot buyers had to compete with more locals, and two Gippsland buyers, which saw a pen of 15 Angus steers 18-20mths, offered by Rothleigh, Alexandra, sell for $840 to top the steer section of the sale.
Crystal Creek, Alexandra, sold 33 yearling Angus steers 14-16mths, Anvil Angus blood, to $830, to average $778. Most of the yearling steers from $700-$840.
GC Palmateer, Broadford, sold 31 Ireland Angus, and Pert Angus blood steers to $760, av $738.
