A RED hot market has kicked of the steer portion of the first day of the Wodonga weaner sales.
Yearling steers set the pace making $1195 (232c/kg).
Unlike last year, northern buyers are well represented with few cattle selling back to Victorian bidders.
The bulk of the weaner steers sold from $720 to $975 with their live weight equivalents ranging mostly from 235c/kg to 260c/kg.
Return vendors Dawn and Graeme Macaulay, "Tiviot Dale", Huon, Victoria, (pictured) pocketed $120 a head more for steers that were the same weight as a lot they had offered at the December Wodonga sale.
The Macaulays - like most vendors here today - were excited by the market.
"Compared to how they sold last month, the prices have certainly lifted for cattle that are the same weight," Mr Macaulay said.
