RECENT heavy rain, and other special store sales, both past and forthcoming, saw a small and very mixed quality offering at Bairnsdale on Friday.
It was noted that a much larger percentage heifers, and cows and calves were penned, influenced by better demand and a couple of herd dispersals.
While the yarding was very mixed it still contained a number of well-bred drafts, albeit in smaller drafts.
There was a good size crowd present, some to buy and others just watching to see how price trends were shaping up.
This Friday (August 29) is a Landmark EGL sale, and some of the vendors for this sale were looking on.
West and South Gippsland buyers purchased the larger percentage of the cattle aided by those from the broader areas of Gippsland, and one feedlot buyer was active in the heifer section of the sale.
The mixed quality nature of the yarding didn't inspire any great change in prices however, some sales of steers and heifers were noted as being very strong.
A small pen of Angus yearling steers, offered by BJ&AE Howard, Bundalaguah, sold for $894 topping the steer section of the sale.
M&M Treasure, Walpa, sold 11 Angus-Hereford steers in prime condition, for $860, and most of the small yarding of older steers sold from $700-$885.
Pender Agriculture, Woodglen, offered one of the larger lines of younger steers, selling 44 Angus and Angus-Limousin steers. Their four pens of steers sold from $545-$700, which encompassed most of the price range for young steers.
