A QUALITY yarding attracted a big crowd for the September spring sale at Yea, last Friday.
The opening pen of 12 Charolais-Angus steers, 14-16 months, was offered by Thornwell, Thornton, and they were in near fat condition.
Selling for $915, or an estimated 203 cents per kilogram liveweight, these steers set the trend for the whole sale.
A number of the early pens of steers were 14-18mths, and sold from $750-$915.
MJ&RR Gough, Mansfield, sold 19 Angus steers to $910, to average $867; R Gesler, Alexandra, sold 10 Hereford steers, 14-16mth, for $895; while Maybrook Pastoral Co, Woodfield, sold 45 Angus and Charolais-Angus steers, 16-18mth to $880, av $778.
An excellent offering of weaned steers, 8-12mth, captured the crowd and sold very well.
Hauco Primary Industries, Bubartha, sold 32 Angus and Charolais-Angus steers 10-12mth, to $875, av $828.
Pen after pen of Angus, Hereford and Charolais-Hereford steers sold between $720-$820, with numerous sales estimated from 215-230c/kg lwt.
MPJ Nominees, Polloch, Nagambie, sold 89 TeMania-bld Angus steers, to $815, av $778.
Koriella, sold 46 Poll Hereford steers, which were older at 14-16mth, to $820, av $788.
Yea sales are respected for the quality of the cattle, and the larger yarding attracted buyers from Gippsland, local districts, plus feedlots and processors. Added to this was competition for live export steers, and all of this interaction saw prices range from $650-$760, for light to medium weight steers.
Liveweight prices for this range of steers were estimated to be from 225-250c/kg lwt.
Preston, Mansfield, sold 34 Angus steers (est 320-345kg), to $810, av $795.
H&J Miller, Nocoleigh, sold 46 Pert Angus-bld Angus steers to $780, av $769, while Keeyuga Past Co, Kilmore, also sold 30 Pert Angus-bld Angus steers to $755, av $738.
Competition was equally as strong for the very good penning of heifers. Many of these were in forward to fat condition, having weathered the winter better than their brothers.
Webb Black Simmentals, Glenburn, sold 13 heifers, 15mth, for $795; and Deloraine, Beveridge, sold 17 Poll Hereford heifers, 12-15mth, for $790.
Many sales of heifers were sold between $565-$690, with one buyer quoting liveweight prices equivalent to 185-200c/kg lwt.
Maybrook Past Co, Woodfield, sold 28 Angus heifers, 14-16mth, to $750, av $707.
The Walsh Family, Taggerty, sold 54 Rennylea-bld Angus heifers to $690, av $670.
Younger heifers continued to sell to strong demand.
Miller, Deniliquin, sold 61 Pert Angus-bld Angus heifers, to $680, av $619.
Topping off a very good sale was cows and calves.
Peter Reynolds, Mansfield, sold eight Angus cows and calves for $1410.
Other sales were noted from $990-$1100.
