GROWN cattle continued to sell well at Bairnsdale, where 1257 cattle were yarded on Friday.
While the price per head eased slightly, the price per kilogram was well down on recent months, with stock already showing the effects of the cold winter in East Gippsland.
Colin Scott & Co, Hinnomunjie, sold Angus steers at $1480 a head and Hereford steers to $1360.
J Geehman sent in five Hereford steers, 574 kilograms, two-year-old, that realised $1480, or 258 cents/kg.
Six Angus steers, 518kg, account SAJ&PM Bowden, made $1350 or 261c/kg.
Clive and Diane Anderson, Benambra, sold two pens of 15-16-month-old steers, including 10 Angus steers, 521kg, at $1340 each or 251c/kg and 10 black baldies, 446kg, at $1235 or 277c/kg.
Lucksan, Orbost, sold Charolais and black baldy steers to a top of $1210. In the same pen, J Rettino sold three Angus steers, at $1130.
Elspeth Hallowes, Nicholson, sent in four Hereford steers that sold to $1160.
R Mulholland, Lindenow South, sold six black baldy steers, three-years-old, 710kg, at $1140, or 203c/kg, while Brian Dyer, Benambra, sold a line of 16-17mo Hereford steers to $1140.
A pen of 15 Angus steers, 452kg, 18 months, account SD Rothwell, sold at $1110 or 246c/kg.
Gary and Diane Freshwater, Lindenow, sold nine Limousin-Angus and two black baldy steers, 18-20 months, at $1015 each.
Gino Dimarco, Calulu, offloaded 10 Angus and black baldy steers, 15-16 months, 415kg, at $1010 or 243c/kg.
Kevin Newman, Nicholson, sent in three pens of 14-15 month-old steers - a pen of 21 Charolais steers, 364kg, sold for $900 or 247c/kg; a pen of three black baldies sold for $900; and five black baldies sold for $800.
D Veldhuizen, Meerlieu, sold eight Gelbvieh steers, 14 months, at $870.
Among the weaner steers, Christa Treasure's pen of eight Herefords, 389kg, 10 months-old, realised $880 or 226c/kg.
Holston Pastoral Co, Tinamba, sold a line of 70 six-seven-month-old steers, including Charolais to $1100, Angus to $910, and black baldies at $720.
Their 15 yearling heifers made to $956 and 16 Charolais heifers made $730. Company manager, Stewart Moroney, was at the sale with his station managers and said he was pleased with the prices on Friday.
It was the first sale of their young cattle since the company expanded into East Gippsland.
SD Rothwell, Maffra, sent in 10 Angus heifers, 18 months, that sold to $1125.

IJ&HM Bates sold nine Angus heifers with calves at-foot (CAF), depastured to an Angus bull that realised $1360/unit.
Philip and Patrizia Neven, Tubbut, sent in seven black baldy cows with CAF that sold for $1170.
NJ&BJ Peck, Maffra, sold 15 Angus heifers, depastured to a Kanuma bull, to a top of $1000.
