EUROA was the scene a small and solid store cattle market on Friday, but with the election looming - it also became the focal point for political announcements.
After the completion of the cattle sale in the afternoon, the Honourable Jacinta Allan, Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Services and Regional and Rural Development, for the Labor Party, made an announcement that if the Labor party are successful at the State elections on November 29, the new Government will give the Strathbogie Shire $500,000 to assist in stage 2 of the Euroa municipal saleyard.
All that aside, the small yarding of cattle sold to solid local district competition, plus some feedlot competition too.
The sale was dearer, especially for heifers, which were $30-$60 a head higher.
With Euroa agents preparing to hold their annual weaner sales at the end of November and early December, the small yarding offered only small drafts of cattle, most of which were in good to very good condition, despite the paddocks drying out early.
McDonald & Nottage, Sugarloaf Creek, sold a pen of 13, two-tooth Angus steers for the sale's top price for steers of $940.
Most steers sold between $620 and $765 with a few pens of young and very light steers from $420-$510.
T Vandenbergle and L&S Kubiec both sold small numbers of Angus steers for $765, and B&J Tuohey, Serpentine, 10 Angus steers for $750.
Gooram Springs, Gooram, sold 17 Angus-Hereford steers, Kilcoolin- and Yathanbrae-blood, for $725, and this sale and many others made more than 200 cents a kilogram liveweight.
Heifers were the surprise package selling to breeder, fatteners and feedlots.
Rothleigh Pastoral, Yarck, sold 22 yearling Angus heifers, Coonamarra-bld, to $770, to av $711. Most of the heifers were younger and sold from $320-$620.
Gooram Springs, Gooram, offered 13 Angus heifers which sold for $620, and Ruff Rock Angus, Ruffy, 15 Angus heifesr, Coonamarra-bld, for $605.
Cows and calves were plentiful, but mixed in age and quality. Competition was erratic, which led to mixed results, and some outfits only reached splitting value.
The top price of $1150 was achieved twice with V McConnell, Berridale, Molka, having a herd dispersal. They sold 16 mixed-age Angus cows and calves, to $1150, av $994. S&J Creely, Balmattum, sold eight Angus cows with 3-5mo CAF for the equal top dollar.
Baarooka Vineyard, Strathbogie, sold 29 Angus cows and calves, the calves by Balgille bulls, to $900, av $853. Due to the mixed quality of the cows and calves, they sold between $720 and $910 for most sales.
