A PERFECT autumn morning led to strong result at the Myrtleford store sale on Friday.
Nestled among many gum trees, the high quality penning of steers and female cattle sold to good crowd of buyers.
Buyers were noted from Bairnsdale, West Gippsland, South Gippsland and Shepparton, with feedlots and local producers equally active.
The sale opened with a good quality line-up of cows and calves, ranging from first- to fifth-calved heifers and cows.
Competition was strong thanks to producers wanting to replenish their herds with females carrying young calves, mostly four to eights weeks of age.
IBP, Havilah, sold 63 Angus heifers with calves at-foot by Anvil bulls, and Hereford heifers, calves by Rossdale and Taradale bulls, from $1290 to the market top of $1880.
These prices covered the range of most sales, but many sold between $1400 and $1690.
Yoralla, Buffalo River, sold 25 Angus cows, second CAF to Alpine Angus bulls from $1100-$1690, to average $1554.
W&E Rouse, Myrtleford, offered 16 Angus cows with third CAF, which made $1300.
A&M Curtis, Rosewhite Ridge, Rosewhite, sold a large line of 106 Angus heifers, which were scanned in-calf to Alpine Angus bulls for September-calving. Selling to strong competition, these made from $860 for smaller frame heifers to $1100, av $1014.
There was a very good selection of quality bred steers penned, which sold to strong feedlot and producer competition.
Most of the steers were Angus with a few pens of Herefords and their crosses, and a small selection of composite-cross steers.
Most of the heavier steers sold to feedlot competition making from $885-$1120.
M Baldwin, Smoko, sold the top pen, which were Angus and Hereford-Angus steers.
Many of the steers were 6-10 months, with prices for these mostly between $700 and $880.
Heyfield, Whorouly, sold 105 Angus and Angus-Hereford steers between $725 and $980 with a feedlot buyer picking the Angus steers out of the pens.
The other steers sold to similar money, despite being rejected by the feedlot buyer.
Some of the younger steers were by Composite and Red Angus bulls.
RH Walpole Partnership, Whorouly South, sold 35 such steers from $665-$780.
Max Blair, Tooma, sold 35 Red Angus steers, Paringa-blood, from $685-$805.
The smaller penning of heifers sold quite well with more feedlot competition than the steers setting solid prices.
M DaSilva, Buffalo Creek, sold 19 Angus heifers, Pinnacle-blood, for $910, and D&H Hummery, seven heifers for $825.
These older heifers were purchased for grain feeding.
Younger heifers had the best competition with some local feeder and producer competition setting the pace.
Most heifers sold from $570-$775. IBP, Havilah, sold 37 Angus heifers from $770-$870, and Heyfield, Whorouly, 41 Angus and Angus-Hereford heifers to $775, av $644.
MJ&N Hall, Buckland Valley, sold 11 Poll Hereford heifers, Dunoon-blood, for $675.
