APRIL-shorn Merino ewes made to $181 a head at end of year Elders Wycheproof store sheep sale yesterday.
The Oakbank blood and bred pen of one year-olds were sold to McRae family’s Traynors Lagoon neighbour Michael Barrett while Kevin Crook’s Tamaleauca-blood and bred young ewes September shorn from Ouyen made $161.
A feature of the 10,500 head sale was the display of breeders’ lines of 14-drop crossbred ewe lambs that made $140- $158 a head for joinable size pens.
The ewe lamb top price was achieved twice on the day by GL & LJ McGurk of Charlton and AD & RL Gawne of Barraport while pens of restocker ewe lambs made$115 to $138 a head.
A pen of September/October 13-drop crossbred ewe hoggets opened the sale and made $179 a head for WE & V Rogers of St. Arnaud.
A large gallery of processor buyers gathered for a largish offering of locally bred wethers.
Sales of one year-old 13-drop wethers made $66- $77 a head while wethers mostly made $57-$94.
While buyer processors claimed two drafts including the top priced wether lambs sold by HG & AH Peverill of Glenloth at $94, stubble graziers generally won the day and sent fattening lambs to Kaniva, Ouyen Swan Hill and Nullawil.
